Pandemain: Selling bread to the Feudal Lord

During the Middle Age, the figure of the Feudal Lord was very important in medieval towns, both as patrons of the arts and as key players in the local economy.

In Pandemain you will find their main servant, with whom you may interact as he travels around town to sell him a bread loaf for their Lord.

Aside from the usual rewards received from selling your bread, and any other benefits awarded by your Master Bakers, you will earn a Favor from the town’s Feudal Lord, which you may choose from the 5 available, such as a cow, a cart, prestige, etc.

By the end of our turn, you can place the Feudal Lord Servant’s token on any other space of the board, to put distance between him and your rivals or to prepare your next turn.

This mechanic adds interaction between the players, adding up to the competition for certain spots of the board and giving players a “lateral” way of getting resources during the game.

Because in “Pandemain: Traditional Farmer’s Bread” there is not just one winning strategy, that is, not just one path to victory. We’ve interweaved the mechanics to offer a rich and challenging experience to players of euro-style games.

Pandemain: Church

In the middle ages, the Church had great influence in European society and the Inquisition, ever vigilant of the faith’s purity, inspired well-deserved fear.

In Pandemain, not only will you have to keep an eye on your rival bakers, but you will also have to keep a decent level of piety and penitence.

This is represented through the penitence track, which aside from offering rewards to the player that reaches certain levels on the track, also brings additional tension to the game: the Inquisitor will travel along this track and, if it surpasses your penitence level, you will get a sambenito (a type of penitential scapular used by the Spanish Inquisition) token, which will affect your final score.

The Church’s approval was so important in medieval society that obtaining it in Pandemain will get you an additional worker, allowing you to perform an extra action every day.

The Church’s location on the board allows you to give offerings, which will earn you varying rewards each turn of the game.

Additionally, the first player visiting the Church each turn can get rid of one sambenito token in their possession, and this will also allow you to alter the game’s order for the next turn, according to the order of visit to this location.

This location has great strategic relevance in the game, and it may go unnoticed at first if you are too focused in baking bread and getting ingredients, but it’s another route to score points and achieve victory in “Pandemain: Traditional Farmers’ Bread”.

Pandemain: Villages

The goal of any self-respecting baker is to sell their bread, and the higher the quality of the loaf and recipe, the higher amount of pfennigs they can get for the sell.

To sell bread in the villages, you will have to send one of your workers, you can only send one to each village and only to those demanding bread types that you can deliver.

You may fulfill every request in a village, if you have the baked loafs, but just once per request “slot”, that is, up to 3 requests per turn.

Sending your worker to sell will cost 1 pfennig for every other worker already at your destination, so plan your sales strategies carefully!

With each loaf of bread you sell to a village, you will earn as many pfennigs as indicated by the price chart of the board and, additionally, you will earn prestige and victory points according to the bread’s quality.

Also, our master baker will earn you rewards when selling your bread, such as ingredients or other benefits. In the same way, you will need a certain penitence level on the track to sell in one of Augsburg’s villages, known for their piety, and it will also reward you with penitence points with every bread loaf you sell there.

And that’s because “Pandemain: Traditional Farmers’ Bread” rewards the players planning long-term strategies, fulfilling the requests efficiently and with great quality bread… or would you rather sacrifice some victory points to sell lower quality bread and quickly earn some very  needed pfennigs? There are many strategies that can lead you to victory in this Euro-style game launching on Kickstarter in October.

Pandemain: Market

Pandemain: Market

The market in medieval towns gathered the region’s townsfolk, both to buy and sell their goods. There are several market stands in Pandemain, where you can buy the required ingredients to complete your recipes.

Market Pandemain

As with any market, arriving early is essential to get the best goods at the best prices. This is represented in the game by three different mechanics: first, the market spaces available are limited; second, when you arrive at the market, you will have to pay 2 pfennigs PLUS 1 extra for each worker already in the market, placed to the right of your pawn; and finally, each player takes the ingredients in the stand they are placed and all others in their shopping route, as indicated by the arrows to the right of your worker.

And what is the purpose of this, you ask? We wanted to balance the resources available in the market, that’s why the players will have to decide which ingredients they need and how much they are willing to pay for them. Additionally, the current market system prevents other players to stop you from getting your so needed resources.

And that’s because in “Pandemain: Traditional Farmers’ Bread”, we’ve developed several routes for the players to achieve their goals, rewarding the players who reach certain destinations first, but without breaking the balance that allows to enjoy a game where you will have to constantly rethink your strategies due to your opponents’ actions.

Pandemain: Feudal Lord’s Oven

The oven is an important source of wealth, although it needs constant maintenance and, at times, even a special permit to own one.

Because of this, before the Master Bakers could get a permit to build their own ovens, they had to bake their bread in the ovens owned by the Feudal Lord, or the religious community in some cases.

The use of the oven usually involved tax payments, which will amount to 1 pfennig for the second worker using it in Pandemain, and 2 pfennigs for any workers using it after that; the first worker baking in the oven every day will be rewarded with a free use.

You can bake as much bread as you can produce for each use, although you will need a cart or an ox to carry more than 2 loafs.

Discard the required resources for the recipe at this time, discounting them from your personal board according to the baked goods.

If you don’t have all the required flour types to prepare a recipe, you can use any other type of flour as substitute for those flours marked with an asterisk in the recipe, but our bread will be of lower quality and shall be placed in the appropriate track of your player board.

This section has several columns, since the bread you bake will lose quality over time, also losing value.

If you’ve used the Master Bakers’ special skill to bake the bread, place a token over the Master Baker. Whenever they have two tokens, you can flip the Master’s card to upgrade it, benefiting from their mastery to bake other types of bread.

You will need to ponder this decision carefully, since their salary will also increase and, if you cannot afford it, the Master will leave your bakery and return to the Guild.

Pandemain: Bakery Guild

In “Pandemain: Traditional farmers’ bread”, you will play the role of a master baker in charge of several apprentices, whom will carry out tasks for you in different places.

You will also need to hire other Master Bakers, adding their own bread recipes to your cookbook, and whom will also give you additional benefits, such as extra items from the market. These bonuses represent the contacts that these Masters have, they were relevant people in medieval society, up to the point of being the only profession allowed to work at night.

There is no limit to the number of Master Bakers you can hire. But beware! If you cannot pay their salary at the start of the day, they will leave. Their salary is indicated at the top of their cards, and it will change according to each Master’s knowledge level. Although, if you upgrade them to their expert side, they will provide you with the most complex bread recipes, like wheat bread.

Because in Pandemain you will always find alternative ways to reach your goals, to prevent having you as an spectator of your rivals’ rise to success in the eyes of the Feudal Lord and the Guild.

Pandemain: Mill and Granary

In “Pandemain: Traditional Farmers’ Bread” we will play the roles of master bakers striving to stand out over their competitors. And what could be more essential than flour for baking a good loaf of bread?

That’s the reason why flour is one the basic pillars of the game, and not just one kind, because there many types of cereals that we can use to make our bread: Spelt, rye, wheat and oat will be the base of the recipes to concoct our loafs.

There are several ways to get it, one of the them being the Mill, where will send our worker to get a full row of cereals, after paying their price. These rows are randomly replenished every day. It’s also worth mentioning that if we take the last row, we will need an ox or cart to carry them, since our poor worker’s back will not be enough.

Another way to get flour is the Granary, where we will leave our workers for the night to get, in the morning, the cereals we need. And as a little historical side note, did you know that grain deposits where the seed of modern credits, with their interest free loans, as opposed to the ones given by Jewish bankers of the time?

Because in Pandemain you will always find alternative ways to reach your goals, to prevent having you as an spectator of your rivals’ rise to success in the eyes of the Feudal Lord and the Guild.
